A FEW CAUTIONARY TIPSNullarbor Open Road

Full services are not available at stops across the Nullarbor. Make sure your vehicle is well prepared. Many trucks and roadtrains regularly cross the Nullarbor. Please take care when travelling near them. Remember they are much bigger than your car and need extra space for travelling. Take care when you see people on bicycles. Be aware that many people cross the Nullarbor on pushbikes. Cyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as any other road user.

Cyclists: Here are some suggestions to improve your safety when cycling. Safety equipment is paramount. Most accidents happen because drivers fail to see cyclists. It is strongly recommended that you wear light coloured clothing. To help make sure you remain safe and as visible as possible, make sure you have a white front light and a red rear light. Every bike must have a red rear reflector. If riding at night or in low light conditions, make sure you also have a white front reflector, wheel and pedal reflectors. Make sure your luggage does not block reflectors. 'Reflectorised' clothing should be worn. The wearing of a helmet is compulsory in SA. The purchase of a helmet-mounted rear-vision mirror is also recommended.

Be sunsmart! Wear a SPF 15 sunscreen, long sleeved shirt and sunglasses. For more information on bike safety, lights, reflectors, bicycle maintenance, maps and touring information, contact Bicycle SA, which is a non-profit, volunteer-based community organisation, at 1 Sturt St, Adelaide, 5000, ph 08 8410 1406.

Please carry extra water when travelling across the Nullarbor. Water is not available at every Roadhouse, even to buy, especially during hot summers. Water is available in some tanks across the Nullarbor, but do not rely on this. If it has not rained recently, there may not be water available.
